“The question of surface is a relentless one to art. Occasionally surface becomes the subject. As he was painting the Nymphéas, Monet was exploring the surface as a ‘plane of concordant appearances’ in which he would simply ‘look at what the universe showed him’. For the duration of artist Hugo Drubay’s exhibition, we thought the question of the surface might be delegated to Duckweed. We made a pool that allowed us to cultivate duckweed lenses, but also to appreciate their floating – what it tells about water, what it tells about plants and their impermanence.”
